Eleven local and international companies have submitted a pre-qualification tender for Bahrain Metro phase one issued by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT).
Competent companies will be qualified to design, build, finance, run, maintain, and transfer the metro network project, which will operate in a driverless operating system based on modern technology and in accordance with international standards, through this tender.
The tender requires the companies applying for qualifications to submit all the required documents and information before the deadline for submission.
The project will be built in two phases, the first of which will consist of two lines with a total length of 29 km and 20 stations.
The scheme, which is expected to have a total length of 109 km and a cost of $2 billion, is to be implemented in four stages. The first will involve building two lines with a total length of 29 km connecting 20 stations with autonomous trains.
The metro will be a light rail transit (LRT) combing tram and metro features, and it is expected to carry 43,000 passengers an hour.
It was first proposed by the MTT in 2008 with work due to begin the following year.
