Abu Dhabi Energy Outlook 2050: Unveiling net-zero ambitions
Detailed roadmap to achieve the Emirate's net-zero vision

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) released the Abu Dhabi Energy Outlook 2050, a comprehensive blueprint that offers a detailed roadmap to achieve the Emirate’s net-zero vision.  The strategic plan includes initiatives the DoE hopes will reshape key sectors like transport, construction, industry, and power.

Abu Dhabi Energy Outlook 2050

The outlook underlines Abu Dhabi’s commitment to ambitious policies and technological advancements. It is poised to accelerate the pace of decarbonization over the next three decades. Aligned with the COP28 Net-Zero Transition Charter, the initiative aims to mobilize all sectors of the economy and society. Hence, it seeks to foster a collective commitment to reducing carbon emissions and developing credible net-zero transition plans.

“This outlook presents an ambitious vision towards our green goals” stated Mr. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of DoE. “The scenarios outlined in the outlook are designed to inspire sustainable change and shape the net-zero transition, without prescriptive measures,” he added.

Development process

The Abu Dhabi Energy Outlook 2050 is the result of a year-long effort involving the DoE’s Integrated Energy Model. The process involved extensive insight gathering and consultations with a diverse array of public and private stakeholders. However, the plan will undergo regular reviews and updates. That is to ensure that it aligns with progress towards net-zero goals, changing markets, and evolving technologies.

Progressive policies and regulations

Abu Dhabi has already implemented a range of decarbonization policies and regulations, including:

  • Clean Energy Targets 2035
  • Regulatory Policy for Clean Energy Certificates
  • Policy for Energy Production from Waste.

The emirate is actively driving innovation in water reuse. Moreover, it aims to achieve 60 percent clean electricity by 2035 and a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.

Collective socio-economic change

Mr. Al Marar highlighted Abu Dhabi’s commitment to inclusivity in achieving these goals. With 40 percent renewable energy already in place, the emirate is targeting a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. He states: “We are also innovating in water reuse and, by 2024, we hope that not a single drop is wasted in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.” The emphasis lies not in limiting options but in forging collective socio-economic change through behavior change, dialogue, agreement, and alignment.

As Abu Dhabi unveils its ambitious net-zero vision through the Abu Dhabi Energy Outlook 2050, the Emirate emerges as a global leader in sustainable development. It has dedicated a comprehensive plan that encompasses diverse sectors and a commitment to inclusivity. Therefore, Abu Dhabi is poised to shape the future of the net-zero transition on a global scale.
