The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) has introduced its Green Bus service, featuring a fleet powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy. This initiative highlights Abu Dhabi’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and improving residents’ quality of life.

Setting new standards in urban mobility

The launch of the Green Bus service emphasizes Abu Dhabi’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge green technologies into its public transport system, setting a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility. The service will run on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall with Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi Media Office reported.

The Green Bus Program

This launch represents a significant milestone in the Green Bus Program, designed to turn Abu Dhabi into a green public transport zone by 2030. A groundbreaking study, the first of its kind in the region, was conducted to evaluate the viability and performance of hydrogen and electric buses in Abu Dhabi’s climate and urban environment. This study included detailed technical assessments of various bus models, conducted in partnership with global bus manufacturers, governments, and leading agencies.

The Green Bus Program further aims to evaluate and implement the most effective hydrogen and electric technologies for Abu Dhabi’s public transport network. It involves working closely with international organizations and bus manufacturers to tailor solutions for the local environment. The program also focuses on enhancing Emirati skills through specialized training, including practical experience in South Korea and China.

Training and maintenance

The program, which began in November 2023, will run until June 2025. During this period, bus operators and drivers will undergo both theoretical and practical training, while certified technicians will receive ongoing instruction to manage daily maintenance and inspections.

Environmental impact and future plans

Additionally, the Green Bus Program will assess bus performance and establish support facilities. With the transition from diesel to renewable energy, Abu Dhabi anticipates reducing its annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 metric tons.

Promoting public-private collaboration

Moreover, the initiative promotes collaboration between public and private sectors, involving local and international stakeholders, including government entities and industry leaders. It further aims to set standards for green buses that align with Abu Dhabi’s climate and operational needs, supporting the city’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
