The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has joined the Advisory Committee of the UAE Alliance for Climate Action (UACA). The move supports the UAE’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions.

UACA was launched at COP27 by Emirates Nature-WWF, an environmental charity. Its aim is to create a multi-stakeholder alliance to drive climate action. UACA wants to accelerate near and long-term net-zero targets, and foster greater collaboration to enable entities to decarbonize. The alliance includes sub-national and non-state actors like the private sector, and is endorsed by the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

UACA is part of the global Alliances for Climate Action. This initiative, led by the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, aims to rally non-state actors to build momentum around halving emissions by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement.

EAD joins UACA Advisory Committee

EAD’s Secretary-General, Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, signed the pledge to join UACA’s Advisory Committee. She was joined by Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, UACA Advisory Committee chair, IUCN president, and UN Climate Change High-Level champion for COP28, as well as Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, director-general of Emirates Nature-WWF.

High-level strategic and technical guidance

Moreover, as an Advisory Committee member, EAD will provide high-level strategic and technical guidance based on its sectoral expertise. This will support UACA’s goal of accelerating the transition to net-zero. EAD will also work to strengthen domestic non-state actor commitments, and engage policymakers to speed up the net-zero transition.

Furthermore, EAD will raise awareness of UACA, identify opportunities for it to contribute to national projects, and share information to support the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative.

Extensive experience addressing climate change

Razan Al Mubarak noted that EAD, as the primary climate action custodian in Abu Dhabi, is well-placed to guide UACA due to its extensive experience addressing climate change. She further highlighted EAD’s recent launch of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy with ambitious emissions reduction targets.

Additionally, Dr. Shaikha underscored Abu Dhabi’s commitment to reaching net-zero by 2050, in alignment with the UAE Government’s vision.
