Abu Dhabi’s Tadweer Group has announced the establishment of a decarbonization pathway, aiming to achieve a 40 percent reduction in emissions across its business operations by the year 2035. This announcement was made during the 11th EcoWASTE Exhibition and Conference, a groundbreaking event for the MENA region’s recycling, waste management, and waste-to-plus sectors, where Tadweer Group serves as a Strategic Partner and Co-Host.
The creation of this decarbonization pathway aligns with Tadweer Group’s commitment to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) generated by the global waste sector, which accounts for approximately 3 to 5 percent of total emissions, particularly methane released from landfills.
Supporting UAE’s national climate initiatives
This initiative also supports the UAE’s third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), a key framework for the country’s efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement. By reinforcing its dedication to the global sustainability agenda, Tadweer Group is poised to make significant strides in environmental responsibility.
Ali Al Dhaheri, managing director and CEO of Tadweer Group, stated, “At Tadweer Group, sustainability is at the heart of our mandate. In line with this commitment, we are proud to announce the development of our decarbonization pathway. This will pave the way for our transition to a low-carbon business. By reducing emissions from waste, we are contributing to addressing climate change challenges and meeting the UAE’s net zero target. Decarbonizing the waste sector in Abu Dhabi will also help achieve international climate objectives and net zero commitments, showcasing our support for the UAE Climate Responsible Company Pledge. And by fostering a deeper understanding of how we can reduce our emissions, we are delivering on our responsibility to helping create a more sustainable world.”
Innovative projects within the decarbonization pathway
The pathway emphasizes Tadweer Group’s initiatives that aim to divert waste from landfills and transform it into valuable resources. Key projects include Abu Dhabi’s first greenfield Material Recovery Facility and innovative waste-to-energy plants. Furthermore, advanced technologies such as waste-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biofuel are integral components of this decarbonization pathway. This initiative serves as a measurable climate transition plan, aligning with the organization’s ambition to minimize GHG emissions by diverting waste from landfills.
In its pursuit of a net zero future, the pathway also incorporates progress from the Waste to Zero initiative, which targets global waste decarbonization. Ultimately, this strategy will enhance air quality, improve public health, create green job opportunities, and generate new revenue streams while positioning Tadweer Group as a leader in low-carbon innovation.
