From October 2022 to December 2023, employees of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recycled a total of 499,541 plastic bottles and aluminum cans. This achievement corresponds to diverting approximately 7,108 kilograms (7.1 tons) of waste away from landfills.

To facilitate the recycling process, DEWA has installed smart machines in select buildings. These machines can be operated through DEWA’s Smart Office app, allowing employees to participate in the recycling initiative. By scanning the QR code on the app, employees earn points for each recycling operation, which can then be entered into a monthly raffle draw for valuable prizes. In recognition of their efforts, DEWA honored 49 employees by the end of 2023.

DEWA’s recycling initiatives align with the UAE Circular Economy Policy and DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy. The focus is on optimizing resource utilization while generating social, economic, and environmental value. These efforts promote sustainable practices, including resource recycling and waste reduction. Furthermore, they contribute to the objectives outlined in the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041. This strategy aims to encourage innovative waste management and recycling methods, as well as the conversion of waste into energy, while providing practical solutions to environmental challenges.

To raise awareness among employees, DEWA organized 13 activities that emphasized the importance of adopting responsible and sustainable lifestyles. These activities encouraged the implementation of sustainable practices both at home and in the workplace, such as improving electricity and water consumption efficiency, reducing waste, minimizing plastic usage, and reusing and recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
