The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently announced that it issued the first two independent charge point operator (CPO) licenses for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Dubai to Tesla and UAEV.
This announcement marks a milestone in DEWA’s new comprehensive regulatory and licensing framework for the development and operation of EV charging infrastructure in Dubai.
The framework aims to address current and future needs, representing a significant step towards supporting green mobility and achieving Dubai’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It also promotes the resilient development of infrastructure to accommodate the growing demand for EVs, while ensuring a seamless and safe experience for users.
DEWA pioneers EV transition
During a special event DEWA held at Gitex Global 2024, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, presented the operating licenses to Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of UAEV; and Mottie Benhamou, market leader – Tesla UAE.
“DEWA has always been at the forefront of supporting the transition towards electric vehicles, in line with the vision and directives of the wise leadership to promote sustainable green mobility,” Al Tayer stated. In 2014, DEWA pioneered the region’s first public EV charging infrastructure.
Al Tayer also explained that DEWA’s new comprehensive regulatory framework and licenses further the collaboration between the public and private sectors.
“It addresses the rising demand for more EV charging stations according to the highest global standards, to keep pace with the increase in electric vehicles in Dubai and the UAE,” he added.
Raising EV share to 50 percent by 2050
For his part, Al Olama highlighted the UAE’s growing EV market, stating that the country aims to increase the share of electric and hybrid vehicles to 50 percent of total vehicles on the roads by 2050. To achieve this goal, UAEV has committed to promoting green transportation by expanding the national infrastructure for charging electric vehicles across the UAE.
Meanwhile, Mottie Benhamou said: “Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy.”
By expanding access to efficient and innovative charging solutions, Tesla supports the country’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Moreover, it contributes to promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
