Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that it has installed over 1 million smart water meters, achieving a 100 percent installation rate, in order to meet the growing demand for water services.
Smart meter installation and benefits
By the start of June 2024, DEWA had installed over 1 million smart meters that comply with the highest international technical standards. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA, emphasized DEWA’s ongoing efforts to develop its smart grid and state-of-the-art smart meter infrastructure. This is further aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, managing facilities and services through smart and integrated systems using disruptive technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and achieving more savings for DEWA and its customers.
“DEWA’s investment in the latest systems and innovative solutions in the water sector has contributed to reducing water losses from 7.06 percent at the beginning of 2018 to 4.6 percent at the end of 2023. This resulted in saving 12.5 billion gallons of water, equivalent to AED451.3 million. We attach special importance to smart meters, which are the backbone of the smart grid,” said Al Tayer.
Moreover, DEWA’s Smart Metres Analysis and Diagnosis Centre monitors the smart meters remotely every 15 minutes.

New water reservoirs commissioned
Last week, DEWA commissioned a new water reservoir in the Lusaily area, which has been connected to DEWA’s water network. The new reservoir has a storage capacity of 60 million imperial gallons (MIG) and cost AED157.4 million ($42.85 million) to construct. Additionally, the new 60-MIG reinforced concrete reservoir in Lusaily has been constructed adjacent to an existing reservoir with a capacity of 120 MIG of desalinated water. DEWA has also recently commissioned a 120 MIG water reservoir in Enkhali and connected it to Dubai’s water network.
