The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has recently announced its accomplishments in its efforts to increase sustainability and efficiency. Between 2006 and 2023, DEWA reduced carbon emissions by 92.5 million tonnes. That is equivalent to planting 484 million trees. The authority achieved this milestone by improving electricity and water production efficiency, which significantly reduced carbon emissions.

Commitment to sustainability

Through that achievement, DEWA reiterates its commitment to consolidating Dubai’s position as a global hub for clean energy and a green economy. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of enhancing the efficiency of energy and water production through innovation, technologies, and continuous upgrades to its production plants, facilities, and projects.

For his part, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, stated: “These efforts have led to a 41.73% increase in electricity and water production efficiency in 2023 compared to 2006, resulting in significant reductions in carbon emissions and substantial financial savings.”

Harnessing innovative technologies

Nasser Lootah, executive vice president of generation (power and water) at DEWA, shed light on the innovative technologies driving the authority’s efficiency gains. The authority produces electricity and water using co-generation technology which saves considerable amounts of energy.

Moreover, DEWA utilizes heat recovery steam generators to trap waste heat from gas turbines to generate additional electricity and provide thermal energy for the water desalination process. Besides, the authority adopts a hybrid system for water desalination which integrates various cutting-edge technologies. This includes multi-stage flashing and seawater reverse osmosis to ensure optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Enhanced efficiency

DEWA’s pursuit of efficiency extends beyond technological innovation. The authority regularly develops operation and maintenance modes to further enhance efficiency across its production plants. Moreover, collaborations with original equipment manufacturers enable DEWA to upgrade gas turbines. This improves their efficiency, performance, and reliability.
