DP World and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) signed an agreement today to accelerate the use of renewable energy. Their aim is to use clean fuels and carbon offsets to reduce emissions from ports and the maritime logistics sector.
Francesco La Camera, director-general, IRENA, and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, CEO of DP World signed the agreement.
Shaping the future of trade
The agreement focuses on identifying and implementing decarbonization solutions in the ports, maritime, and logistics sectors.
“We are honored to partner with the IRENA on this transformative journey towards a shared global vision for renewable energy that supports supply chains,” Bin Sulayem stated.
He added that DP World is working on shaping the future of trade and building resilience and sustainability at all levels. The agreement will leverage both companies’ extensive network and influence to enhance the supply chain sector. It will provide the solutions needed not only in operations but also across borders. This ensures the sustainable flow of trade around the world. “Together, we will drive meaningful change and set new standards for a greener future” stated Bin Sulayem.
The maritime sector
For his part, La Camera stated that the maritime sector remains one of the most challenging sectors in terms of decarbonizing its operations. DP World’s innovative use of smart operations in electrification is leading the way in transforming the ports, maritime, and logistics sectors towards renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency.
He added that the partnership with DP World represents a pioneering step towards accelerating efficient and innovative energy solutions based on renewable energy sources.

Commitment to carbon neutrality and net zero emissions
IRENA is the leading intergovernmental agency in the field of energy transformation. It works to promote reliance on all forms of renewable energy on a large scale. It includes sustainably as part of its efforts to achieve sustainable development, obtain energy sources, and provide energy security. In addition, it aims to achieve economic growth and prosperity with low rates of carbon emissions.
IRENA and DP World will collaborate to exchange views on the initiatives at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) starting later this month.
Moreover, DP World will call for urgent climate action. It leverages this large platform and influence to bring the supply chain industry together to develop impactful, long-term solutions. Meanwhile, it aims to ensure that trade continues to flow around the world. The company has already committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
