The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has announced the appointment of Dr. Marwan Alzarouni as Chief AI Officer. Upon his appointment, Dr. Alzarouni emphasized the goals of Dubai’s AI Blueprint, which focuses on enhancing the quality of life for Dubai residents and further elevating the experiences of its visitors.

“Our AI initiatives are dedicated to prioritizing the well-being and experiences of Dubai’s residents and visitors. By harnessing advanced technologies, we strive to create a smarter, more sustainable, and enjoyable urban environment, ensuring that every innovation directly contributes to improving our community’s daily lives,” stated Dr. Alzarouni.

Dubai, a global AI hub

Dubai DET’s announcement of appointing Dr. Alzarouni as Chief AI Officer comes following the announcement by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, of appointing 22 Chief AI Officers across various government entities in Dubai. These officers will spearhead special plans and programs in the field of AI and advanced technology.

The broader goal of appointing Chief AI Officers is to enhance government performance by investing in the latest AI technology solutions and tools. The Dubai Center for Artificial Intelligence, which is part of the Dubai Future Foundation, has assessed candidates for this role.

“This initiative will enhance Dubai’s progress and expertise in this sector and consolidate its position as a leader in creating innovative solutions built on advanced technology,” stated Sheikh Hamdan.

This initiative marks the initial phase of realizing Dubai’s vision for the future of government work in line with the Dubai Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence. The first phase of the blueprint also includes launching AI and Web3 incubators and announcing an AI Week in educational institutions. Dubai will also fast-track land for data centers and the new commercial license for AI.
