The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), under the leadership of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, recently convened its 81st meeting virtually, with a focus on advancing sustainable development initiatives and promoting energy efficiency across the emirate.

The council reviewed updates of the Demand Side Management Strategy for 2030 and 2050, which set well-studied goals to reduce water and electricity consumption. The council also linked those goals to various initiatives and programs to propel Dubai’s sustainable development. Those initiatives include green building activities, building retrofits, efficient operation of industrial and government facilities, and leveraging treated wastewater, external lighting and cooling. The aim is to position Dubai as a leading example in efficient energy and water demand management.

Electric vehicle infrastructure

The council also discussed recommendations to bolster the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations across Dubai. Emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships, the council seeks to support private companies in building and installing charging stations. Notably, the number of electric and hybrid vehicles in Dubai reached 49,300 by the end of January. Moreover, Dubai installed more than 390 charging stations during the same period. The council aims to increase these numbers in the coming years to further support Dubai’s sustainable infrastructure.

Commitment to green economy

The council is also committed to promoting a green economy and sustainable development. Therefore, the council periodically reviews programs that aim to reduce water and electricity consumption in both the private and public sectors.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice chairman of the DSCE, explained that these reviews fall in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Moreover, they aim to achieve standards and mechanisms that demonstrate the effectiveness of implementation and the percentages that Dubai has achieved in energy resource management. Moreover, the periodic program reviews ensure the existing strategies reflect Dubai’s achievements and goals and ensure the effectiveness of the existing programs.
