Dubai Ports Authority, a subsidiary of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), has announced the successful execution of its inaugural LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) bunkering operation in Dubai. This initiative highlights Dubai’s role as a leader in the shift toward sustainable energy sources while also minimizing the carbon footprint of the maritime sector. The move also aligns with Dubai Ports Authority’s steadfast dedication to Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050.
Representing the first operation of its kind within the region, this accomplishment marks a pivotal moment in promoting sustainable practices and environmental preservation, thereby strengthening Dubai’s status as a global center for sustainable maritime operations.
The LNG bunkering operation took place for the cruise ship ‘Costa Smeralda’ at Dubai Harbour. This achievement signifies an essential advancement in enhancing sustainability within maritime transport and tackling global climate issues. In alignment with Dubai’s strategic initiatives to safeguard marine ecosystems and lessen the effects of climate change, this operation also embodies the UAE’s broader commitments to reducing carbon emissions in accordance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets.
Commitment to carbon neutrality
His Excellency Nasser Al Neyadi, group CEO of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, remarked that the successful execution of the LNG bunkering operation illustrates the Authority’s commitment to supporting Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050. “This milestone underscores our commitment to building a sustainable maritime ecosystem in line with Dubai’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, which seeks to generate 100 percent of energy capacity from clean sources by mid-century.”
Through innovative solutions and robust regulatory frameworks, we aim to overcome existing challenges, create opportunities for environmentally friendly practices, and reinforce Dubai’s status as a global leader in the maritime industry,” he noted.
Focus on alternative fuels
Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, CEO of the Dubai Ports Authority, the regulatory body overseeing port operations throughout Dubai, elaborated on the Authority’s initiatives to facilitate LNG bunkering and promote the use of alternative fuels in the emirate. He emphasized the establishment of a comprehensive Fuel Bunkering Regulation, which offers structured guidelines for port operators and LNG suppliers. This regulation adheres to the highest global standards for safety and environmental sustainability, ensuring operational efficiency and compliance with international benchmarks.
He further stated: “The successful completion of the first LNG bunkering operation in Dubai is a resounding demonstration of our strategic vision to position the emirate as a premier hub for sustainable maritime operations. We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing the UAE’s environmental objectives by facilitating the adoption of cleaner fuels and supporting regulatory innovation. The Authority continues to collaborate with stakeholders to expand alternative fuel bunkering services, thereby accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices and further enhancing Dubai’s global maritime standing.”
Moreover, Dubai Ports Authority’s ongoing emphasis on sustainability aligns with the emirate’s vision of promoting innovation, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship. As Dubai advances toward realizing its Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, initiatives such as LNG bunkering will remain central to its efforts to cultivate a sustainable and prosperous maritime sector for future generations.
