Partnering with Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ) and Derq, Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) launch 14 AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing Systems. The upgrade aims to equip DSO with cutting-edge capabilities and smart city solutions. Using behavior prediction models, the technology takes proactive measures to activate warning signs, in-road lights, and traffic signal controllers.

Derq is a leading developer of AI traffic and road safety technologies. The program is called Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform. It is designed to reliably detect pedestrians, cyclists, and road users. Moreover, the system integrates road infrastructure, in turn, offering enhanced safety measures.

Traffic signals for approaching vehicles are activated for pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, the system gathers valuable data to enhance road users’ awareness and enable authorities to respond promptly to safety concerns and traffic performance. The safety of the system has been rigorously tested over a period of two years.

Muammar Al Katheeri, Chief Officer of Engineering and Sustainability at DIEZ, said, “By integrating this state-of-the-art technology, we are creating an exceptional environment that prioritises innovation, safety, and sustainability. This system serves as a cornerstone in cementing DSO’s position as a technologically advanced zone, offering residents and business partners a seamless and intelligent living and working experience. Through our longstanding partnership with Derq, we will continue to make remarkable progress in ensuring pedestrian safety and advancing Dubai’s smart city agenda.”

The technology

The algorithms detect and track approaching vehicles, optimizing reaction times. Further, customizable alerts are activated based on specific crossing scenarios, ensuring optimal safety and efficient traffic management.

In turn, the AI system utilizes algorithms to detect and monitor vehicles and other road users as they approach pedestrian crosswalks. So, the algorithm factors in reaction time.

The system allows for custom alert activation and deactivation. Also, alerts activate at a predetermined crossing time, or as long as a pedestrian is detected in or near the crosswalk. Therefore, this ensures safety and efficient traffic management.

Moreover, the 5G connection supports the system’s function. This enables the collection of traffic data, and facilitates remote operation, maintenance, and configuration. Effectively, the system leverages 5G communication technologies, effectively conveying safety information and alerts to vehicles approaching the crosswalk.

Building safer roads

Additionally, the UAE announced on Tuesday an initiative tackling road safety. Interactive warning systems will be installed on roads with high accident rates. Also, locations that require pedestrian crossings will be identified.

Summing up, this effort is part of the National Programme for Infrastructure Development. Also known as Salamah 365, it includes monitoring dams and valleys to predict floods. Additionally, the Abu Dhabi Police introduced a road alert system in May that informs drivers on road conditions and traffic accidents.
