The Airports Council International (ACI) revealed that Dubai International (DXB) maintained its title as the world’s busiest international airport for international travel in 2023 for the 10th consecutive year. With the resurgence of international air travel following the COVID-19 pandemic, the ACI’s preliminary top 10 busiest airports list showcases the evolving global aviation landscape.

Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths expressed immense pride in DXB’s achievement, emphasizing the airport’s decade-long dominance in international air travel. “Throughout this decade, DXB has surpassed many records and attained numerous milestones, from welcoming our billionth passenger to introducing new terminals and facilities,” Griffiths stated.

DXB leads in global aviation

Griffiths attributes DXB’s success over the past 10 years to collaborations with multiple airlines which broadened the airport’s connectivity. Moreover, he shed light on the importance of enhancing the airport experience for travelers. DXB’s commitment to excellence has set a new benchmark in the aviation sector, reiterating the airport’s leading position in the aviation sector.

“Together, we have bolstered Dubai’s reputation as the premier destination, offering unparalleled travel experiences worldwide,” added Griffiths. Looking forward, Griffiths states that Dubai Airports is committed to maintaining DXB’s dominant position for the next decade and beyond.

Factors driving aviation’s recovery

Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World’s director general, highlighted that several factors propelled global aviation in 2023. China’s airports reopened and saw a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions. While U.S. leaders continue to dominate the top 10 busiest airports for passengers overall, de Oliveira sees a notable shift. DXB surged to second place for the first time in terms of overall passengers. Meanwhile, Tokyo Haneda International Airport witnessed a remarkable ascent from 16th position in 2022 to 5th in 2023.
