Dubai’s Emirates has initiated the implementation of its fuel agreement with Neste at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Throughout 2024, a total of over 2 million gallons of blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will be supplied into the airport’s fuelling system. The airline will employ standard industry accounting methodologies to monitor the delivery of SAF and assess the environmental benefits. The partnership between Emirates and Neste, announced in the latter part of the previous year, represents one of the largest SAF purchases made by the airline thus far.

Over 700,000 gallons of pure SAF

Once fully integrated into Amsterdam Schiphol’s fuelling system, the blended SAF will consist of more than 700,000 gallons of pure SAF. Additionally, Emirates is collaborating with Neste to introduce SAF into the fuelling systems at Singapore Changi Airport within the next few months.

Emirates has a history of advancing the use of SAF. Its first flight powered by SAF blended with conventional jet fuel occurred in 2017 from Chicago. Presently, the airline operates flights from Paris, Lyon, and Oslo utilizing SAF. In October of the previous year, Emirates, with the support of its partners, successfully integrated SAF into the fuelling systems at Dubai Airport, allocating the fuel to several flights, including one to Sydney.

Emirates joins Solent Cluster for low carbon investments

Earlier this year, Emirates became the first international carrier to join the Solent Cluster in the U.K., an initiative focused on low carbon investments and the potential establishment of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes per year by 2032, if operational. The airline actively participates in various industry and UAE government working groups and engages in ongoing discussions with multiple stakeholders to facilitate the expansion of SAF production and supply. Emirates, in collaboration with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), has played an active role in developing the UAE’s power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels roadmap, a project driven by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the World Economic Forum. Additionally, Emirates contributes to the UAE’s National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap, which aims to transform the UAE into a regional hub for alternative aviation fuels, with a goal of producing 700 million liters of SAF by 2030.

Emirates is a founding participant of the UAE research consortium Air-CRAFT, which brings together entities from the aviation, government, regulatory, academic, fuel production, and manufacturing sectors. Air-CRAFT is dedicated to the development, production, and scaling of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technologies for the industry.
