Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has set its sights on revolutionizing the city’s public transport infrastructure with a comprehensive three-year plan that aims to improve 22 bus stations and depots. The authority has awarded several contracts for the plan, which encompasses 16 bus stations and six bus depots.

The plan includes infrastructural works on buildings, providing comprehensive passenger facilities, passenger waiting terminals, driver service offices, bus overnight parking spaces, engine maintenance workshops, and dedicated bus inspections and maintenance bays. Hence, the RTA aims to elevate the quality of public transport services while fostering a more seamless commuting experience.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the RTA, highlighted the project’s broader objective of not only facilitating passenger mobility but also enhancing the overall travel experience. “Building public bus stations and depots forms a key part of RTA’s strategy to enhance the public transport infrastructure. It aims to encourage the community to opt for public transport in their daily movements,” he added.

Strategic renovation of key stations

RTA’s project will focus on upgrading 16 bus stations strategically located across key areas in Dubai, including Deira and Bur Dubai. Stations such as the Mall of the Emirates, Jebel Ali and Gold Souk will undergo renovation to enhance building facades, infrastructure, and passenger facilities including prayer rooms.

Additionally, RTA will develop six bus depots at Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwyyah, Al Aweer, Jebel Ali and Al Quoz. The authority will revamp inspection lanes, drainage systems, floor maintenance, provide engine wash lanes, and install new system infrastructure.

Moreover, the RTA will introduce residential quarters for drivers at Jebel Ali and Al Quoz depots. It will also install traffic signals and sidewalks, revamp external lights, and improve the infrastructure of security systems.

Integration and connectivity

The RTA aims to create a welcoming and accessible environment for people of determination by linking various transport modes and development projects. Moreover, it seeks to transform Dubai into a walkable city by implementing public bus parking, cycling lanes, pedestrian crossings and bike racks.

Furthermore, the RTA’s advanced fleet of public buses, adhering to stringent safety and quality standards, underscores its commitment to sustainability. Equipped with state-of-the-art features and complying with Euro 6 European regulations for reduced carbon emissions, these buses aim to set a precedent for public transport in the region.
