Egypt aims to raise its information and communication technology (ICT) sector’s contributions to the gross domestic product (GDP) to 8 percent by 2030, an increase from the current 5.8 percent in fiscal year 2023-24.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Amr Talaat, recently emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering the ICT private sector in Egypt through strategic collaborations with international partners. These collaborations seek to establish submarine cables, attract investments in cloud computing, and promote local mobile phone manufacturing.

Initiatives to promote a skilled workforce

To ensure a skilled workforce, Egypt has launched a comprehensive training program for the ICT sector, which aims to train 500,000 individuals this year. This initiative will further scale up to train one million professionals by 2029-30, strengthening Egypt’s ICT sector capabilities.

In addition, the country aims to raise the number of digital innovation centers to 32 by 2026 to support innovation and research.

Egypt’s government also expects the outsourcing industry to experience substantial growth with the number of specialists in the ICT sector rising from 130,000 in 2023 to 550,000 by 2026. Egypt currently generates $3.7 billion in digital exports. By 2026, it expects this number to rise to $9 billion.

In line with raising the ICT sector’s economic contributions, Egypt has committed to enhancing its digital infrastructure. This includes the expansion of broadband coverage nationwide, the replacement of copper networks with fiber optic cables, and an increase in the number of mobile towers to 50,000 by 2030.

In addition, the digital Egypt platform will undergo additional updates to provide better digital services to citizens. Moreover, the Egyptian Post Office network will also undergo modernization.

Under the Haya Karima initiative, Egypt aims to connect 9.3 million buildings with fiber optic cables, upgrade 1,741 post offices, and build or update 1,981 mobile towers. In addition, the country aims to promote digital literacy programs among 500,000 citizens, contributing to the overall development of Egypt’s digital landscape.
