Dubai has a robust public transport system

Dubai recorded an estimated 702 million riders in 2023, with the daily ridership of public transport, taxis and shared transport services averaging 1.92 million. These figures are according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Accommodating such volume requires a robust transport system — and the city doesn’t disappoint. However, navigating Dubai’s public transport options can be overwhelming, especially for first-timers. This is when an NOL Card in Dubai comes in handy.

How to use your NOL Card

nol card dubai

Once you have your NOL Card, it’s easier to navigate Dubai. However, your card must have at least AED7.50 before you can use it. If it’s below the minimum balance, make sure to top up.

If you have sufficient balance, you’re now ready to check-in.

  • Approach the card reader at the entry points of the public transportation of your choice.
  • Carefully place your NOL Card on the reader.
  • Wait for a beep or look for the green light indicating a successful check-in.
  • Pass through the gate or entrance

When exiting a station or a bus, you must place your NOL Card on the card reader again. Like you did when you checked in, wait for a beep or a green light to ensure a successful check-out.

Now, if you’re using it to pay your taxi fares, you just have to swipe it and let your balance cover your expenses. Moreover, you can use it to pay your parking fees across paid parking lots in the city. Simply insert your NOL Card in the dedicated slot to buy a parking ticket.

Fines to keep in mind

The RTA has implemented measures to encourage the responsible use of the innovative NOL Card. As a public commuter in the city, you must be aware of fines for certain NOL Card-related violations.

If you fail to present your NOL Card upon request, you must pay a fine of AED200. The same amount applies if you use someone else’s card, an expired card or an invalid one.

Tips when keeping and using your NOL Card

Consider these tips to ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience with your NOL Card:

  • Protect your card. Invest in a protective pouch so you can keep your card safe.
  • Use it with care. Never place more than one NOL Card on the reader. Additionally, avoid bending, scratching or placing it in your back pocket.
  • Stay informed on rules and penalties. Familiarize yourself with RTA’s bus and metro penalty rules to avoid fines, including those unrelated to your NOL Card.

Final thoughts

The introduction of the NOL Card surely had a positive impact on Dubai’s commuters. However, there is more to the card than just beung a means to getting around Dubai. If you have this card, you can also use it for retail purchases at certain outlets. By the end of 2019, it became accepted at over 5,000 retail stores. Moreover, you can use it to enter parks in Dubai, including Mushrif, Zabeel, Mamzar and Creek Park.

Your NOL Card in Dubai lets you enjoy several benefits, so make the most of it by keeping it safe and following rules and etiquette.
