The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is set to launch the much-anticipated inaugural edition of the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale in line with the city’s vision as a global centre for culture and an incubator for creativity. The month-long event will start on the 1st of October and aims to highlight the importance of calligraphy as an expressive tool to reflect multicultural content while supporting Dubai’s creative scene.

The biennale’s program will showcase a wide variety of calligraphic artworks and highlight the importance of traditional and contemporary typography in more than 8 languages. Expected participation of more than 200 local and international artists with 18 exhibitions across 30 locations in Dubai.

The Dubai International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition at the Etihad Museum features 90 works that explore Arabic calligraphy’s visual language through pieces created by over 50 artists. A further exhibition of over 100 artworks and calligraphy-inspired pieces that reflect diverse cultures at Dubai’s Design District will celebrate the art as a means of cultural exchange. The AWC Gallery in DIFC, Gate Avenue will present contemporary art masterpieces demonstrating the interplay of letters with shapes and colours.

There will be further exhibitions at Al Shindagha Museum that highlight the UAE’s interest in history through 25 works and a collection of manuscripts that recount the beginnings of Arabic calligraphy and its influence on contemporary Emirati art.

Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children, Cultural and Scientific Association – Al Mamzar, Al Safa Art and Design Library are some of the other locations where bespoke fine pieces will be displayed throughout the month.
