Authorities in Oman have declared a one-day holiday for the Islamic New Year

The Islamic month of Dhu Al Hijjah is almost over and with it will end the current Islamic lunar year, also known as the Hijri year.

The next Hijri year, 1446 AH, will begin with the month of Muharram.

According to the list of holidays approved by the UAE Cabinet, Muharram 1 will be a public holiday.

When is Muharram 1?

According to data shared by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, the month of Muharram is likely to begin on Saturday, July 6, subject to moon sighting. This is based on the premise that the current month of Dhu Al Hijjah will last 29 days and end on Friday.

Has a holiday been declared?

The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced that Sunday, July 7, will be an official paid holiday for private sector companies in the UAE.

Oman announces holiday

The Oman News Agency has announced that Sunday, July 7, will be an official holiday for employees of the public and private sectors on the occasion of the Islamic New Year.

Other UAE holidays this year

According to the list approved by the UAE cabinet, the country will observe a holiday for the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Rabi Al Awwal 12. Meanwhile, National Day holidays will be observed on December 2 and 3.
