The UAE’s Ministry of Economy has announced that Kenya is the latest country to gain access to its Trade for Development platform. The UAE launched the platform during the World Trade Organization’s 13th Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to empower developing nations by providing them with technical assistance and expertise in trade negotiations.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, minister of state for foreign trade, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable trade. The Trade for Development platform underscores the UAE’s dedication to driving economic growth and prosperity globally. By sharing its trade negotiation expertise, the UAE aims to support Kenya in integrating into the global economy and improving living standards for its citizens.

Trade for Development platform

The Trade for Development platform is a technical assistance program that the UAE developed. It offers multiple online tools to assist trade officials, negotiators and policymakers from developing nations. This allows them to negotiate complex and highly technical trade agreements.

One of the main obstacles many countries face is the lack of resources and technical expertise to effectively participate in the global economy. Therefore, the Trade for Development platform offers curated online courses and self-learning resources on trade agreements. It acts as a resource for developing country officials as they formulate trade policy and negotiate trade deals.

Kenya’s enrollment in the Trade for Development platform highlights the strengthening trade and investment relations between Kenya and the UAE. In 2023, bilateral non-oil trade between the two countries reached $3.1 billion, a 26.4 percent increase from 2022.

Moreover, Kenya is one of the most promising economies in Africa with its real GDP growing by 5 percent in 2023. It is the ninth country to get access to the platform following Ethiopia, Mozambique, Antigua and Barbuda, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Comoros, Kyrgyzstan and Barbados.
