Kuwait has announced plans to allocate $604 million to the Ministry of Public Works to complete the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port project during the fiscal year 2024-2025. The project, which has an area of 1,161 hectares, will revolutionize Kuwait’s maritime infrastructure and solidify its position as a key player in regional trade and transport.

Enhanced maritime capabilities

The funding plan underscores the government’s commitment to expediting the port project, which has faced delays in the past. Upon completion, the project will be able to accommodate 24 berths. Moreover, it will have a capacity of 8.1 million containers. Therefore, the port will significantly enhance Kuwait’s maritime capabilities, marking a significant milestone in the country’s development trajectory.

The Ministry of Public Works has intensified efforts to fast-track the project’s execution. It resumed issuing tenders for phase I of the project approximately eight months ago. The tenders also encompass crucial aspects such as the operation and maintenance of the port’s cathodic protection system.

Strategic significance

According to the feasibility study for the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port, the project will likely cost KWD990 million ($3.2 billion). The port project holds immense strategic importance for Kuwait. Once operational, it will transform Kuwait into a pivotal hub for transit trade and regional transport. Moreover, it will position Kuwait as a dynamic commercial center in the wider Middle East region.

In addition, the Mubarak Al Kabeer Port project includes the implementation of a crucial road linking the Subiya area to the east of Bubiyan Island. It also includes the completion of the port dock and land reclamation and the design of handling equipment and quay deepening. According to the ministry, the design for the joint waterway with Iraq is also complete, further enhancing Kuwait’s connectivity and trade potential. Moreover, around 90 percent of the work on the 7-km-long link road on Bubiyan Island, reaching the port area, is done.
