Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Energy, the operator of the South Andaman Gross Split, announced a second substantial gas discovery in South Andaman, Indonesia. The Tangkulo-1 exploration well, drilled in South Andaman, is located around 65 kilometres offshore North Sumatra, Indonesia. This announcement comes just a few months after the major discovery at the Layaran-1 well in the same location.

Well’s capacity

This discovery marks the second deep water well that the company operates. Mubadala Energy drilled Tangkulo-1 to a depth of 3,400 meters in 1,200 meters of water depth to locate the gas.

Utilising a new Drill Stem Test (DST) design, Mubadala Energy confirmed that the well flowed 47 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of excellent gas quality and 1,300 barrels of condensate. Therefore, it estimates the well capacity to reach 80-100 mmscf/d and more than 2,000 barrels of condensate.

Transforming Indonesia’s energy landscape

Commenting on the discovery, Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, CEO of Mubadala Energy, explained that in addition to Layaran-1, this discovery will transform Indonesia’s and Southeast Asia’s energy landscape. Moreover, it “demonstrates that South Andaman is one of the world’s most exciting energy plays”, he added.

By working with partners and utilizing Mubadala Energy’s world-class technical capabilities, Al Hamed reiterates the company’s commitment to realizing the full potential of this block. “This news also strengthens our ability to play a proactive role in the energy transition through our gas-biased strategy,” he added.

Mubadala Energy has acquired an 80 percent working interest in South Andaman. Moreover, it is the largest net acreage holder in the area. In line with its gas-biased strategy, Tangkulo-1 will be an important pillar in the company’s development and potential.

In addition to Layaran-1, the discovery in Tangkulo-1 supports Mubadala Energy’s organic growth in the region.
