In his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has enacted a law that reorganizes the General Administration of Abu Dhabi Customs.
Under this law, the General Administration of Abu Dhabi Customs, functioning under Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, possesses an independent legal identity. It is tasked with proposing general policies and strategic plans for customs affairs within the emirate. Additionally, it facilitates trade flow and ensures adherence to customs regulations. The administration also aids in protecting society from illegal activities, Abu Dhabi Media Office reported.
Key roles and responsibilities of the administration
The administration is further charged with managing and operating customs offices throughout the emirate. This includes executing customs policy, suggesting the establishment or closure of customs offices, and collaborating with relevant authorities to restrict, prohibit, and regulate the import, export, and transit of specific goods.
Customs duties and regulatory compliance
Moreover, the administration’s essential roles encompass inspecting and valuing authorized goods, collecting customs duties, taxes, and other applicable fees, as well as overseeing free zones, free markets, and customs warehouses in accordance with relevant regulations.

Facilitating trade and logistics
The administration’s responsibilities also extend to coordinating and organizing all processes associated with facilitating the movement of goods and managing the logistics chain across all customs ports and free zones within the emirate. This includes regulating customs clearance by issuing the required permits and instructions, as well as monitoring the activities of customs brokers.
Combating smuggling and enforcement
As part of its commitment to combating smuggling and customs-related offenses, the administration works in coordination with relevant authorities to investigate, detect, and address customs violations and smuggling activities. It further enforces necessary legal measures against offenders.
Managing confiscated goods and settlements
Additionally, the administration oversees conciliation settlements, the sale of seized, abandoned, and confiscated goods, and the execution of customs exemptions.
