Qatar Airways Group has made remarkable a move in its African expansion strategy by acquiring a 25 percent stake in Airlink, Southern Africa’s leading independent regional airline. This strategic investment, announced by Qatar Airways Group CEO, Eng. Badr Mohammed Al Meer, during a press conference, will provide the Qatari national carrier with access to Airlink’s extensive network, connecting travelers to and from regional cities in southern and eastern Africa.
Eng. Al Meer stated that this partnership signifies Qatar Airways’ commitment to Africa’s economic growth and its belief in Airlink’s resilience, agility, and financial strength. He emphasized that their investment in Airlink underscores the crucial role they see Africa playing in their future. He added that this partnership not only reflects their confidence in Airlink but also in Africa’s immense potential, which they are thrilled to help unlock.
For his part, Airlink CEO, Rodger Foster, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact of having Qatar Airways as an equity partner. He stated that this investment is a powerful endorsement of Airlink and their commitment to the markets they serve and plan to expand. He further added that it will unlock growth through efficiencies of scale, increased capacity, and wider marketing reach, ultimately strengthening Airlink and its partnerships.
Driving economic growth in Africa
The investment will further enhance the existing code-sharing partnership between the two airlines, allowing Qatar Airways to leverage Airlink’s network of over 45 destinations across 15 African countries. Moreover, this strategic move will drive Qatar Airways’ presence in Africa, solidifying its role as a key driver of the continent’s economic success.
