Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed the maintenance and refurbishment of metro trains, along with essential rail grinding activities, as part of its annual preventive maintenance initiative. This undertaking is designed to improve the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of Dubai Metro assets, in line with RTA’s Strategic Plan 2030. It underscores Dubai’s dedication to sustainable urban transport while reinforcing the significance of Dubai Metro as a crucial component of the emirate’s public transportation framework.
Among the key maintenance tasks carried out were rail grinding operations on the Red and Green Lines of the Dubai Metro, spanning a total distance of 189 km. Rail grinding is vital for eliminating surface imperfections and restoring the original specifications of the railway tracks, ultimately prolonging the lifespan of these essential assets, according to a statement.
These initiatives highlight RTA’s commitment to adhering to the highest safety and quality standards to ensure passenger comfort. Advanced grinding equipment, equipped with 16 grinding stones and operated by skilled teams, was utilized to guarantee the long-term safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the rail infrastructure.

Train overhaul and maintenance
RTA has also completed the refurbishment of its fleet of 79 trains, which have collectively traveled over 1.5 million kilometers since the launch of Dubai Metro. This comprehensive maintenance and refurbishment program has significantly boosted train availability and punctuality, achieving an impressive rate of 99.7 percent. As a result, Dubai Metro ranks among the most reliable metro systems globally. The process also reduces the likelihood of future corrective maintenance, thereby lowering long-term costs and enhancing operational efficiency.
Hassan Al Mutawa, director of Rail Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, emphasized that the preventive maintenance program is fundamental to their commitment to operational excellence and sustainability for Dubai Metro. He noted that through initiatives such as rail grinding and the refurbishment of the train fleet, they consistently ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the entire network. He mentioned that these actions enhance the sustainability of their infrastructure, reduce costs, and promote environmental responsibility, aligning with their vision for a carbon-free future. Furthermore, he stated that their objective is not only to meet global standards but to establish new benchmarks for urban transportation, ensuring passengers have a safe, comfortable, and reliable travel experience.
