Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently opened two major bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project.

The first is a two-lane bridge, spanning 601 meters with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. It serves the eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road then northward towards Al Qusais and Deira.

“Upon completion, the project will cut the distance and journey time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira by 40 percent, from 20 minutes to 12 minutes during peak hours, stated Mattar Al Tayer, director general, chairman of the board of executive directors, RTA.

Project set for completion in October

The second is a two-lane bridge, spanning 664 meters, enabling Dubai’s free traffic flow by eliminating overlapping of traffic coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading southward towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port. The bridge can accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour.

“It will also reduce the journey time for motorists coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading rightward to Al Yalayis Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port by 70 percent, from 21 minutes to seven minutes,” added Al Tayer.

The project is set for completion in October with Dubai’s RTA opening the final bridge which will connect the Garn Al Sabkha Street intersection with Al Asayel Street. This bridge spans 943 meters, with two lanes in each direction, and will handle a total of 8,000 vehicles per hour. In addition, it will ensure seamless traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Intersection improvement project 97 percent complete

Al Tayer also announced that the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is 97 percent complete. This project seeks to keep pace with the ongoing development of Dubai and accommodate the needs of urban development and population growth.

“The project entails the construction of four bridges, stretching 2,874 meters in total with a capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour,” noted Al Tayer. In addition, it includes road works spanning 7 km including improvements to the surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, in addition to streetlights, traffic signals, traffic systems, stormwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems.

The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is part of RTA’s master plan to develop strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads, such as the recently completed Al Yalayis Street and Expo Street. These corridors support Dubai’s mobility networks, serve many development projects on both sides and accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
