The UAE is getting ready to launch a revolutionary transportation innovation that will accelerate travel between its main urban centers. The Seaglider transport system has the potential to provide faster and less expensive connections between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

How does the Seaglider work?

The all-electric vessel designs combine airplane speed together with boat accessibility for the exclusive purpose of coastal water transportation. The Seaglider runs emission-free while delivering three operational settings. The aircraft moves at a reduced speed during docking operations as it leaves and approaches the port to reduce drag while avoiding wave disturbance.

What makes it stand out?

The Seaglider uses its maximum speed of 180 mph to fly above the water where it will travel the city-to-city route within 30 minutes. For AED165 ($44.92) passengers can expect a higher speed transportation than helicopter flight while still maintaining lower fares than taxi services.

Who’s behind this exciting innovation?

CEO and Founder Billy Thalheimer of Regent Craft presented this technology to the public audience at the World Governments Summit (WGS) in Dubai on February 11. Through its innovative creation the Viceroy Seaglider Regent Craft operates as an American startup dedicated to transforming Emirates travel.

Results from a recent consumer survey demonstrated high levels of UAE resident interest in the Seaglider as 98 percent of them showed strong approval for this concept surpassing the global average of 86 percent. Potential demand for the seaglider service is evident because the UAE coast hosted 85 percent of residents and Dubai-Abu Dhabi routes received half of monthly visitors.

When can we expect to see it?

Production testing of Seaglider prototypes continues before their commercial release is projected for the following two years. The Seaglider development received support after the DRIFTx conference followed by an agreement between the Abu Dhabi Investment Office in 2018.

The Seaglider stands as one among various breakthrough transportation systems that recently began entering the UAE market while flying taxis will debut in Abu Dhabi during this year. Technological advancements enable the UAE to construct a better travel future.
