His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri decree to establish and organize the Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone.
The decree stated that a free zone would be established in the emirate of Sharjah, in the city of Kalba. Moreover, it has the necessary legal setup and capacity to accomplish its goals and exercise its authority. The free zone also enjoys financial and administrative independence and reports to the emirate’s Communications Technologies Authority.
The decree also stipulated that the zone’s name in English is as follows: Sharjah Communication Technologies ‘Free Zone’ (COMTECH).
Supporting the communication technology sector
The free zone aims to enhance the emirate’s position in communication technologies, contribute to its economic development, and establish an attractive hub for investments, partnerships, and skilled professionals in communication technologies.
In addition, the free zone seeks to support and promote the communication technology sector to elevate Sharjah’s global standing in this field. Moreover, it aims to create a conducive environment for investing in technological transformation, artificial intelligence and future technologies.
Finally, the free zone aims to support technology firms, information centers, and artificial intelligence institutions in addition to developing national talent in science and attracting international professionals working in communication technologies.

Free zone’s role
According to the decree, the Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone will formulate legislation, policies and strategic plans for the region in line with approved standards and practices. Moreover, it will present them to the council for appropriate action. The zone will ensure compliance with international agreements and treaties in all regional areas in line with the UAE’s commitments.
The free zone will also play a major role in developing and implementing communication technology policies and strategies within the emirate. Moreover, it will have the power to grant licenses to companies interested in engaging in marine and land cable extensions related to communication technologies.
Another major role the Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone will play is establishing data centers for companies operating in the region and providing technical, administrative, and skilled personnel to companies upon request.
The Sharjah Ruler established the zone to also promote partnerships and agreements at local, regional, and international levels among other tasks.
