Telecom Egypt and EXA Infrastructure signed a commercial agreement that aims to revolutionize the global data traffic flow between the East and the West, passing through the Mediterranean Sea. The agreement leverages Egypt’s strategic position as a crucial hub for international connectivity, particularly to Europe.
Mohamed Nasr El Din, Telecom Egypt managing director and CEO, and Nick Read, chairperson of EXA Infrastructure, signed the agreement in the presence of Amr Talaat, Egypt’s minister of communications and information technology.
Enhanced connectivity
For its part, EXA Infrastructure will extend its network from Europe to the coastlines of Egypt to create a single service point for global traffic from the Middle East and Asia to Europe. With its multipath routing and protection solutions, EXA Infrastructure will accommodate international capacities between Egypt and hundreds of points in Europe and North America.
Moreover, EXA Infrastructure will use Telecom Egypt’s WeConnect. Hence, WeConnect provides agile access to Egypt’s extensive subsea cable infrastructure. Moreover, it enables users to combine connectivity between subsea cable systems in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea using a neutral model.
For its part, Telecom Egypt will provide integrated solutions to global customers from Asia directly to internet traffic hubs in Europe. Moreover, it plays a pivotal role by supporting over 90 percent (200 TBps) of the international data traffic volume crossing Egypt.
Strategic vision
The agreement aligns with Telecom Egypt’s strategy to bolster its footprint as a transit point between Asia, Africa and Europe. It signifies the beginning of a collaborative effort between the two companies to implement digital infrastructure initiatives that cater to the evolving demands of the global digital landscape.
For his part, minister Amr Talaat emphasized the agreement’s importance in bolstering Egypt’s international digital infrastructure. Thus, Telecom Egypt’s new agreement aligns with the state’s strategy to transform Egypt into a global digital data corridor. Talaat added that the ministry aims to enhance Egypt’s competitiveness in international submarine cables, leveraging its unique geographical location.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Nasr highlighted Telecom Egypt’s commitment to offering flexible options for directing traffic from Egypt to European Internet points of presence through EXA Infrastructure’s network. He emphasized the partnership’s focus on meeting the growing demand for international connectivity, particularly from the Far East and Africa. He added that WeConnect allows all networks to use 19 submarine cable systems to seamlessly reach key points in Europe via the EXA Infrastructure network and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
