The government of the UAE has introduced the “Data Index,” a standard designed to improve government performance and monitor advancements in the management and governance of national data. This index aligns with global best practices and standards pertaining to statistics and data management.

What is the Data Index?

Crafted through a thorough strategy by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) in partnership with the Prime Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, the Data Index acts as a crucial benchmark. It further empowers federal government entities to manage and offer high-quality data and statistics that meet global standards within the data and digital government framework of the “Performance Management System.”

How does the project enhance transparency?

This launch coincides with the UAE’s “Unified UAE Numbers” project, a significant national initiative aimed at enhancing transparency, increasing data accuracy, and driving progress across various sectors, including economic, demographic, social, and environmental domains. These initiatives also demonstrate the UAE’s aspiration to emerge as a global frontrunner in utilizing data for strategic decision-making and sustainable development.

Key areas addressed

Mohammed Hassan, executive director of the Statistics and Data Science Sector at FCSC, stated that the index encompasses three essential areas: the governance of data’s regulatory and operational frameworks, the implementation of best statistical practices to improve data quality, and digital transformation initiatives for managing data production processes within federal entities. Furthermore, this approach guarantees reliability, quality, and comprehensiveness, thereby facilitating informed decision-making at all levels.
