The M42 company, Healthpoint, has reported 100 successful robot-assisted surgeries this year alone. The procedures were performed with the ‘Mako’ robotic arm technology developed by Stryker. The advanced, revolutionary technology arrived to the UAE about a year ago.
The Mako technology is designed for a range of procedures including total knee, uni knee, patellofemoral, and hip replacements. Compared to traditional methods, it offers superior precision, improved outcomes, quicker recovery times, and reduced post-operative discomfort for patients. This type of robotic-assisted surgery is widely available internationally.
The mechanics
The orthopedic robotic arm-assisted surgery technique enables surgeons to carefully strategize joint replacement procedures. A CT scan is used to create a three-dimensional model through digital tools. This digital model offers the surgeons and doctors a holistic view of the joint from multiple angles. By examining the joint replacement in advance, the medical team can formulate the best surgical approach. Meticulous pre-operative planning allows for every procedure to be fully simulated and evaluated before being carried out.
Dr. Jonathan Conroy, a highly regarded orthopedic robotic surgeon from the UK, introduced Healthpoint to the technology. His specialty focuses on robotic-assisted hip and knee surgery.

Omar Al Naqbi, the Executive Director of Healthpoint, states, “At Healthpoint, we are delighted to have been able to help so many patients using the cutting-edge ‘Mako’ robotic arm by Stryker. The milestone of 100 successful surgeries thus far using robotic arm-assisted surgery is a great achievement for our caregivers and has proven to be a game changer for our patients, too. Healthpoint will continue to monitor the market for new technologies that have the potential to improve the overall patient experience. This milestone serves as another achievement in our ongoing journey to deliver excellence in all aspects of care to our patients, and to bring world-class healthcare closer to home.”
A success story
In addition to treating patients within the UAE, Healthpoint has also treated individuals from the United States, Kuwait, and Egypt. The hospital’s patients span a wide age range, from a 15-year-old patient who underwent a total hip replacement to an 84-year-old patient who received a total knee replacement.
Robot-assisted medical care is a growing field. Just earlier this month, robot-assisted biopsies are being used by doctors in London. Reports state that the use of this technology could increase detection rates of lung cancer by more than a quarter.
