The UAE has positioned itself as one of the major players in the global aviation sector in 2024, recording over 1 million air traffic movements over the year. This remarkable milestone underscores the UAE’s essential role as a global aviation hub with a strategic location, advanced infrastructure and efficient operational systems.
Crossing the historic threshold of 1 million air traffic movements in a single year reflects the efforts of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Center in delivering exceptional air navigation services that meet the aspirations of global airlines and enhance the air travel experience.
“Achieving the milestone of one million air traffic movements in a single year is not a mere numerical achievement but a reflection of the UAE’s steadfast commitment to developing the aviation sector as a cornerstone of its national economy and solidifying its position as a global air transport destination,” stated Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and chairman of GCAA.
UAE sees over 20 percent growth in air traffic
On December 22, 2024, the UAE recorded the one-millionth annual air traffic movement with the arrival of Emirates Flight 305 from Shanghai. This day stands as a historic moment in the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Center’s legacy, highlighting its success in embracing cutting-edge technologies and achieving excellence in the aviation sector. It also underscores the center’s dedication to sustained progress and its prominent role in the sector.
Over the years, the country has implemented innovative national initiatives and strategies to enhance its competitiveness and prominence in the civil aviation and air services sector, both regionally and globally. Achieving over 1 million air traffic movements in a single year highlights the UAE’s capacity to deliver innovative and integrated solutions that enhance the efficiency of aviation operations.
“With over 20 percent growth in air traffic over the past two years, among the highest globally, the UAE is well-equipped to handle even greater volumes in the years ahead, supported by advanced infrastructure and skilled workforce and state-of-the-art technologies,” added bin Touq.

Innovative solutions support growth
As the global aviation sector recovers from the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Center has demonstrated its capability to efficiently and flexibly manage the steady increase in air traffic, presenting a benchmark in airspace management.
In 2024, the center witnessed remarkable advancements, including the integration of advanced systems and the adoption of innovative solutions to improve airspace efficiency and minimize delays.
“With an average growth rate of 10.3 percent in 2024 compared to last year 2023, we remain committed to continuously enhancing our systems and services to uphold the highest standards of safety and efficiency, reflecting sustainable development and continued success in managing air traffic successfully and professionally,” stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director-general of GCAA.
In line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision and “The Year of Sustainability”, the center also adopted sustainable practices that support the country’s objectives and contribute to reducing the aviation sector’s environmental footprint. Additionally, it enhanced airspace capacity to meet increasing demands while ensuring the highest safety and reliability standards, further strengthening global airlines’ confidence in the UAE’s services.
