Of the seven official holidays announced by the UAE cabinet, we have already observed six. Until now, UAE residents have enjoyed holidays for New Year’s Day on January 1, Eid Al Fitr (three-day holiday from April 8 for the private sector), Arafah Day and Eid Al Adha (four-day holiday from June 15), a one-day holiday on July 7 for the Islamic New Year, and a one-day holiday on September 15 for the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.).
According to the official list, only one holiday remains for the rest of the year: UAE National Day.
When is the National Day holiday?
Residents will observe a two-day break for the UAE’s National Day, on December 2 and 3 (Monday and Tuesday). When clubbed with the weekend, UAE residents will be able to enjoy a four-day break.
Why and how is the UAE National Day celebrated?
The UAE’s National Day falls on December 2. This is the day when the rulers of the emirates signed a unification agreement to create the United Arab Emirates, thus transforming the separate states into one thriving nation.
‘Spirit of the Union’ is the official theme of the UAE’s National Day celebrations.
Events and decorations can be seen all around the country to mark the occasion.
The national flag can be seen fluttering at key buildings. Schools and offices mark the occasion with a flag-hoisting ceremony. Streets and important landmarks are lit up with the national colours. Even cars are decorated under strict regulations.
Fireworks are held at several locations and events highlighting the UAE’s rich culture and history are held across the country.
