The UAE's sustainable development report is an urgent call to action for all stakeholders to recommit to global collaboration and to leave no one behind

The UAE recently revealed its latest report on sustainable development beyond 2030 at the United Nations (UN) High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development organized by the UN Economic and Social Affairs Department at its headquarters in New York.

The ‘XDGs 2045: Navigating the Future of our World’ report, developed by the UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is a forward-looking report that outlines a sustainability roadmap that extends 21 years beyond the UN’s 2030 Sustainability Agenda.

“Looking beyond the 2030 agenda, our focus remains on fostering a competitive and knowledge-driven economy. The UAE is dedicated to leveraging innovation and strategic partnerships to address emerging global challenges, ensuring that we continue to contribute effectively to both our national prosperity and global sustainable development,” stated Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs.

Inclusive future for all

The report draws on findings from the 2024 Ministerial Roundtable, a pivotal gathering that took place during the World Governments Summit 2024. It provides a high-level review of past global development agendas, evaluates current progress towards the 2030 agenda goals, and outlines the critical steps to ensure a sustainable and inclusive future for all. In addition, it is critical for global leaders throughout the world as they plan for an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.

The UAE continues to promote the implementation of sustainable development goals by fostering a global debate that not only assesses progress but also actively influences future phases of global development.

As the world approaches the 2030 deadline, the need to develop a post-2030 agenda becomes critical. Therefore, the “XDGs” model described in this discourse is an ambitious but feasible approach to tackling urgent global concerns through a lens of greater inclusion and collaboration.

Transition from SDGs into XDGs

This year’s ministerial roundtable highlighted the transition from SDGs into XDGs, where the focus shifts from specific goals to an inclusive global vision that considers the complexities of a fast-changing world.

The UAE’s report discusses several important areas, including climate resilience, technology inclusion, economic inequality, and health crises — challenges that need cross-cutting solutions and unwavering international cooperation.

In addition, the report streamlines the roundtable discussions into practical ideas, highlighting the XDGs as an essential platform for not just maintaining the momentum of the SDGs, but also expanding and adapting them to suit increasing global needs.

Moreover, the UAE’s report seeks to accelerate action across several sectors, ensuring a future in which sustainable development is not a choice but a fundamental principle for global prosperity and equality beyond 2030.

Looking forward

The UAE’s sustainable development report is an urgent call to action for all stakeholders to recommit to global collaboration and to leave no one behind. It explores avenues to initiate the development of an inclusive global agenda spanning 2030 to 2045. Moreover, it acts as a strategic roadmap that inspires and mobilizes collective action, ensuring that future endeavors are well-informed, impactful, and inclusive.
