The UAE has announced plans to combat government bureaucracy and enhance efficiency across the UAE. Under the Zero Government Bureaucracy program, government departments are tasked with eliminating 2,000 unnecessary procedures within a year. Moreover, the program aims to simultaneously cut the time it takes to carry out services by 50 percent.

Key initiatives and incentives

Addressing the need for improved government services, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, outlined the comprehensive bureaucracy strategy. He emphasized the goal of streamlining procedures and combatting bureaucracy to enhance people’s lives and position the UAE as a global leader in service provision. As part of the initiative, bonuses of up to AED1 million ($272,000) will be awarded to employees or teams showcasing exceptional performance in raising standards and reducing unnecessary procedures.

Striving for excellence

Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to evaluating bureaucracy and enhancing UAE government services has been at the forefront of his governance. In May 2023, he revealed customer satisfaction ratings for various services, highlighting passports and driving licenses as the best-performing services. Moreover, he acknowledged the need to improve areas such as booking medical appointments and attesting education certificates.

Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to excellence prevailed when he addressed shortcomings and bureaucracy in the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure service center in Ras Al Khaimah. The announcement emphasized a 60-day improvement window for underperforming services. Moreover, it outlined potential contract termination or modification for employees failing to meet the set standards.

Furthermore, the UAE’s initiatives aim to be the best government in the world in providing services. The ambitious plan aligns with Sheikh Mohammed’s long-standing commitment to positive interactions with the public through efficient service channels.
