UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan extended warm wishes to the people of the UAE and Muslims around the world on the occasion of the Hijri New Year.

In a message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he stated:

Islamic New Year

The Hijri New Year, also known as Islamic New Year or Ra’s as-Sanah al-Hijriyah, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. It commemorates the historic migration (Hijra) of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, an event that signifies the foundation of the first Muslim community and the start of the Islamic era. The first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, is observed as the Hijri New Year. The occasion is typically a quiet, reflective time for Muslims, focusing on prayer, remembrance, and gratitude.

In the UAE, the Hijri New Year is a public holiday, and government offices, schools, and many businesses close for the day. The date shifts each year by about 10 to 12 days earlier due to the lunar calendar. In 2025, the Hijri New Year 1447 will be celebrated in the UAE on June 27, signifying an important occasion for both the UAE and the broader Muslim community. The day further serves as a time for families to gather, for communities to reflect on the values of faith, perseverance, and unity, and for leaders to extend messages of goodwill and hope. Across the Muslim world, the occasion is marked with special prayers and sermons, emphasizing themes of renewal, peace, and compassion.
