UAE’s national oil company ADNOC has announced the deployment of an industry-leading artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled process optimization technology. Developed by ADNOC, the Neuron 5 system has been initially implemented at ADNOC Onshore’s Northeast Bab (NEB) field and ADNOC Gas’s Taweelah gas compression plant, encompassing hundreds of critical equipment.

The innovative solution autonomously monitors the performance of essential equipment, enabling process optimization and preventative maintenance. This reduces operational downtime, boosts efficiency, and minimizes the need for time-consuming manual inspections. Neuron 5 leverages advanced AI models and deep learning algorithms to predict maintenance needs and monitor equipment performance by interpreting data such as pressure, temperature, and vibration, collected from sensors on critical equipment.

Expanding Neuron 5 across ADNOC’s operations

Following the successful initial deployment, ADNOC plans to roll out Neuron 5 across all its facilities, encompassing thousands of critical production assets, including compressors, valves, and generators.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC upstream executive director, stated that ADNOC is placing AI at the core of its operations and leveraging industry-leading advanced technologies to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand. He elaborated that the creation and implementation of Neuron 5 across ADNOC’s upstream and downstream operations exemplify this strategic approach in practice. He further highlighted that these efforts underscore the company’s ongoing advancement. These efforts underscore the company’s aspiration to become the world’s leading AI-empowered energy enterprise.

ADNOC Gas has already deployed Neuron 5 at the Taweelah plant. This deployment is supporting ADNOC’s efforts to provide a reliable, uninterrupted gas supply to major industries in Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates.

Potential impact of Neuron 5 technology

The initial trial phase of Neuron 5 has suggested that the technology holds the potential to significantly decrease unplanned shutdowns. It has suggested the technology can decrease unplanned shutdowns by up to 50 percent. It has also suggested that the technology can enhance planned maintenance intervals across ADNOC’s operations by 20 percent.

Furthermore, the deployment of this innovative solution is expected to free up ADNOC’s operators. This will enable them to focus on more productive and valuable activities.

Neuron 5 was developed through a collaborative effort between ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Centre, AIQ, and AVEVA.
