Egypt’s cabinet has recently announced that it greenlit a proposal from the UAE-based Masdar for commencing studies on a solar energy station project capable of generating up to 4 gigawatts (GW) of energy.

In a statement, the cabinet also revealed that it approved the advancement of another project by Masdar with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts along with the inclusion of storage batteries holding a total capacity of 240 megawatt hours.

Furthermore, Egypt’s cabinet authorized multiple protocols for the implementation of renewable energy initiatives that Empower, a subsidiary of the UAE’s Al Nowais Investment Group, proposed. These initiatives include the integration of storage batteries, either as complements to solar energy systems or as independent projects.

The proposals and the cabinet’s efforts in the renewable energy sector aim to meet the growing demand for electricity across Egypt. Moreover, they facilitate the operation of additional capacity by the upcoming summer to avoid electricity cuts in the highest demand seasons.

In a recent development, Masdar, and Infinity Power signed a power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to deliver a long-term supply of renewable energy from the onshore wind project in Ras Ghareb, Gulf of Suez region.

Once complete, the wind farm will have a capacity of 200MW and will produce 810,000MWh per year. Moreover, it will avoid 403,672 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Egypt’s sustainability ambitions.

Masdar’s investments in Egypt’s renewable energy sector fall in line with the country’s National Strategy for Climate Change 2050 and 2030 Vision which seek to increase renewable energy’s share of the energy mix to 42 percent by 2035.
