The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and the Ras Al Khaimah Petroleum Authority (RAKPA) have formalized their collaboration in the energy sector through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement was finalized by Sharif Al Olama, who serves as undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, and Christopher Wood, chief executive of RAKPA.

This MoU facilitates cooperative efforts in sustainable energy transformation, emphasizing activities such as the exchange of geological, geophysical, and hydrogeological data, research on natural hydrogen, exploration of carbon capture through mineralization, and assessment of geothermal energy potential in Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE.

These initiatives reflect a collective dedication to a low-carbon future, addressing the increasing demand for energy while striving to meet shared objectives in sustainable energy transformation.

Pathway to net zero by 2050

Al Olama stated that their commitment to enhancing collaboration among government entities to meet national energy targets and promote a transition to sustainable energy remains strong. He further emphasized that the partnership with RAKPA aligns with this commitment and represents a significant step toward achieving the UAE’s goal of net zero by 2050, as highlighted at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28).

He further mentioned that the collaboration with RAKPA supports their initiatives to shift to clean energy and improve environmental sustainability by integrating innovative technologies, including natural hydrogen and carbon sequestration. This approach aims to fulfill the national vision of positioning the UAE as a leader in clean and renewable energy while ensuring a sustainable future for upcoming generations.

Focus on advanced technologies

Christopher Wood remarked that the MoU underscores RAKPA’s dedication to advancing innovative energy solutions in Ras Al Khaimah. He noted that collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure allows them to leverage their combined expertise to investigate advanced technologies in natural hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage.

Furthermore, both entities plan to work together on organizing joint technical and regulatory workshops and launching studies on emerging energy technologies.
