Bayanat AI PLC, Abu Dhabi’s provider of AI-powered geospatial solutions, and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC, UAE’s satellite solutions provider, announced the successful launch of their first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. The satellite, launched in partnership with ICEYE, a pioneer in SAR satellite operations, entered orbit on August 16, 2024.

This landmark achievement marks a significant milestone for the UAE’s space sector. Moreover, the Bayanat-owned SAR satellite, launched via integrator Exolaunch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11 rideshare from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, has established communication and is undergoing initial operations.

Furthermore, the satellite is a key component of the Earth Observation Space Program, a collaborative effort between Bayanat and Yahsat to develop a comprehensive SAR constellation. This constellation will further provide high-resolution, persistent monitoring solutions, delivering valuable data for various applications.

The satellite utilizes SAR technology, an active sensing system that illuminates the Earth’s surface and captures images regardless of weather conditions or time of day. ICEYE’s radar antenna offers a wider coverage area and higher-resolution images compared to other SAR satellite services, providing customers with enhanced insights.

The Earth Observation Space Program reflects Bayanat and Yahsat’s commitment to advancing the UAE’s space sector, fostering local talent, and establishing sovereign satellite data acquisition and processing capabilities. Additionally, this initiative aligns with the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030, demonstrating the country’s progressive vision for space exploration.

The successful launch further positions Bayanat and Yahsat at the forefront of the region’s burgeoning space ecosystem, driving innovation and supporting national and commercial interests. The satellite launch is the latest milestone in the ongoing partnership between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE.

Consistent data stream for diverse applications

In 2023, the Earth Observation Space Program was established to build national satellite remote sensing and Earth Observation capabilities within the UAE. The constellation of LEO satellites will provide a consistent data stream for end-to-end SAR solutions, covering the entire value chain from upstream to downstream capabilities.

Strengthened disaster response capabilities

The orbiting satellites will revisit the Middle East more frequently, enabling Bayanat and Yahsat to deliver near real-time, high-definition images of on-the-ground conditions. This strategic initiative strengthens the companies’ ability to provide timely and accurate geospatial insights, crucial for applications in disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility.
