The World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 convened leaders from across the globe to explore solutions and chart a course towards a greener future, especially for the aviation industry.

H.E. Juan Carlos Salazar, secretary-general of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO); and Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus SE discussed challenges and opportunities facing the sector in a WGS 2024 session titled ‘Aviation and Emissions: Can Governments Find a Balance’.

Sustainable fuel technology

During the session, Salazar emphasized the pivotal role of alternative fuels in mitigating carbon emissions and achieving sustainability goals in aviation. He highlighted ICAO’s efforts to foster collaboration with governments worldwide to expand the production and supply of sustainable fuels.

Salazar also underscored the importance of incentivizing policies to promote their adoption. Moreover, he emphasized the potential economic benefits for both local and global economies. “This will help cut carbon dioxide emissions and achieve sustainability goals in the aviation sector,” he added.

The World Governments Summit, Salazar noted, has provide an excellent platform for addressing the challenges hindering the adoption of clean energy in aviation. In addition, it has paved the way for exploring policy interventions to facilitate the transition.

Towards zero emissions

Addressing the industry’s zero emissions target by 2050, Faury stressed the need for concerted efforts and innovation. He outlined Airbus’ commitment to investing in sustainable aviation fuel projects and enhancing aircraft efficiency through technological advancements. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of improving air traffic management systems. Faury also underscored the importance of exploring emerging technologies such as electric and hydrogen-powered engines.

Furthermore, the Airbus chief executive highlighted the significance of operational efficiency in reducing emissions during ground operations. He emphasized the industry’s dedication to achieving carbon neutrality through collaborative action and technological innovation.

“By working hard and leveraging advances in technology and sustainable practices, the aviation industry is committed to achieving its ambitious goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050,” he stated.

As governments, industry leaders, and international organizations collaborate during WGS 2024 to tackle emissions, the aviation sector is poised to play a pivotal role in the global transition to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
