EtihadWE was established in 2020 to carry out the duties assigned to the Federal Electricity & Water Authority at that time. It is wholly owned by the Emirates Investment Authority, and is mandated to meet the electricity and desalinated water needs of the northern emirates. It covers the areas of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Dhaid, Fujairah, Dibba and Ras Al Khaimah.
