Maserati Levante GT Hybrid is the unique addition to the pack

For us, the word Maserati brings to life all the Italian cliches; style, poise, performance, and soul. While some might find these terms overused, we are firm advocates that the marque is the true guardian of them all.

For the Levante, Maserati has gone with the motto “Faster. Greener. Unique”. And we’d like to think they are accurate. When it comes down to the numbers, the Levante Hybrid GT is faster than the diesel and more sustainable than both the diesel and gasoline versions. The Luxury SUV is also lighter than the 6-cylinder models. It trumps them both in terms of agility, thanks to the battery sitting in the rear, therefore improving weight distribution which translates into a car that is much more fun to drive. In short, on paper, the Maserati Levante Hybrid GT stays true to the brand’s reputation despite the reduced power.

The Engine

Under the stylish bodywork sits a conservative 4-cylinder, 2-litre-engine that delivers 330hp and generates 450 N.m. of torque. As with all Levante models, the Hybrid GT comes with multiple drive modes; Normal, Sport, Ice, and Offroad. The Hybrid has a function that is referred to as Sailing. The clever technology disengages the transmission when on the move which in turn cuts emissions and saves fuel. Sort of like moving the gear stick to neutral while gliding downhill, but of course, the technology is much more complex.

The 0-100 time is impressive, in just 6 seconds. When we did the acceleration test, the smooth delivery was a particular delight. Taking the Levante GT through some of the curviest bends did not disappoint either. The car held its own with minimal body-roll and maximum agility. With a top speed exceeding 240 km/h, it really ticked all the boxes one would expect from a sporty SUV.

In terms of resourcefulness, the 48-volt Hybrid system allows the engine to recover much-needed energy during deceleration and braking, which can then be used to improve efficiency throughout the car.

The Interior

Moving inside the cabin, the premium interior with high-quality two-tone leather, and detailed stitching ensures an elegant environment as we’d expect. The cabin is spacious too, with plenty of headroom, large windows, and a sunroof to give it a very bright and airy feel.

The imposing Trident on the steering wheel, and the blue leather stitching on the seats and door panels, all add to the elegant styling while hinting at the Levant’s hybrid identity. As usual, the beautifully crafted analog instrument cluster is something we love, keeping true to the brand’s performance pedigree. The tech in the center console features the most up-to-date Connect software with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The Maserati connect system also allows the driver to keep tabs on all aspects of the car through a Smartphone and Smartwatch.

The Exterior

Not a great deal has changed in terms of exterior styling, and it would take quite the effort to spot the difference between the GT Hybrid and others. The giveaways are the now trademark blue GT badge and the vents along with the matching brake calipers that are a sign of the hybrid models

The sleek and sporty lines of the Levante GT compliment the new grille which was introduced last year. The quadruple exhaust system and rear styling are all elements that add to the aggressive yet refined look.

The Verdict

Maserati has created the ultimate gentleman’s luxury SUV that is packed with a luxury interior, handsome exterior, a rather satisfying performance, and kind to the environment, all at the same time.
