The gig economy has transformed how most people work, giving them flexibility, freedom, and plenty of new financial opportunities. Understanding how this works is essential to determine if this is the right career path for you.

How it works

People working as part of the gig economy operate as independent contractors and are mostly known as freelancers. For the most part, they find their “gigs” (also known as “jobs” or “freelance projects”) online. As independent contractors or service providers, people working in the gig economy are largely responsible for their own benefits, such as insurance; and obligations, such as taxes.

A lot of these gigs can also be performed remotely, with the occasional onsite presence required by some clients. Because of this, those working in this fashion have more control over how they complete their projects.

Some of the most popular jobs in this style of work involve marketing, writing, technology (like software development and graphic design), and business (like accounting and financial management).

Benefits and advantages 

The gig economy appeals to many workers worldwide for various reasons, including:

Flexibility

One of the reasons why people participate in the gig economy is the flexibility they get to enjoy. Professionals are not required to commit to a full-time schedule. Instead, they have complete control over their time and can schedule work around other commitments.

Additional income

Not all people working in the gig economy are full-time contractors. Some workers accept assignments on a part-time basis. The additional income supplements their overall spending power, allowing them to live more comfortably.

Affordable help

One of the main reasons why companies support the gig economy is affordability. Companies do not have to invest in full-time employment benefits when hiring a contractor or consultant. They still get the required work done without investing in employing a full-time professional.

Independence

Workers in the gig economy do not have to report to an office or are subject to company rules and regulations. They do not even have to file for leaves to take a vacation. The ability to work remotely grants freelancers the privilege of working on their terms, free from employment obligations.

Drawbacks and disadvantages

While the gig economy has several advantages, there are also downsides. Here are some of the drawbacks of the gig economy:

Lack of benefits

Independent contractors are not entitled to employment benefits, such as health insurance and allowances. They will have to file their taxes and manage their employment benefits.

Isolation

Workers in the gig economy are incredibly independent. While this may serve as motivation for some, it may create a feeling of isolation for some people.

Lack of security

One of the significant drawbacks of the gig economy is the uncertainty of maintaining regular work. The landscape has become increasingly competitive, making it more challenging for workers to secure gigs.

Despite the attractive benefits the gig economy offers, there are arguments that the rise of the gig economy can lead to the ‘race to the bottom.’ With more people offering their services online, many workers are forced to lower their rates to remain competitive. There is also a concern regarding working conditions, as independent contractors may have to work longer hours to make ends meet.

While the gig economy has transformed the way many people work, serious concerns about job security and worker rights exist. The unprecedented freedom and flexibility may be attractive, but there is a concern that contractors should be treated fairly and paid reasonably. At the end of the day, there needs to be a balance between the benefits the gig economy affords against the drawbacks to determine whether this is the right option for you.
