Due to a mismatch between high demand for travel and a shortage of workers, the aviation industry in Europe and the United States is seeing strikes among airport workers, which is resulting in hundreds of flight cancellations at major airports.

Britain

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, passengers in Britain are experiencing aircraft delays and long queues at all airports, which are exacerbated by missing baggage issues.

Additionally, due to a significant staffing shortage, Heathrow International Airport in London announced the cancellation of 30 flights last Saturday.

More than 6,000 travelers have been left stranded as Heathrow struggles to accommodate the rising demand for travel.

Another 1,500 flights handled by British Airways were canceled yesterday, the majority of which were scheduled to depart in July.

France

Also in France, numerous scheduled flights were canceled Saturday in France at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, as a result of airport workers’ ongoing strike. These workers are calling for an improvement in their living conditions, including higher wages and access to employment, in light of France’s high inflation rate and the country’s strong rebound in air travel with the decline of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Air France maintained its long-haul program last Friday while announcing the cancellation of more than 10 percent of its short and medium-distance flights out of Charles de Gaulle Airport.

United States

According to the Flightware website, which specializes in monitoring air traffic, airlines in the United States on Saturday canceled roughly 600 flights and delayed more than 2,200 due to a major crew shortage.

Last Friday’s situation was extremely challenging as 587 flights out of 3,060 worldwide were canceled, causing delays for another 8,000 passengers.

Germany

Long lines and bulk flight cancellations are occurring at Germany’s airports, especially at Lufthansa. The German government stated that it will hire foreign workers to put an end to the turmoil. There is a 7,200 staff shortage in German airports.

Spain

At least 10 Ryanair flights and 5 EasyJet flights were canceled. Also, another 175 Ryanair and EasyJet flights were postponed in Spain as a result of the two low-cost airlines’ staff members going on strike over pay and working conditions.
