British explorer and television presenter Alice Morrison is preparing for an extraordinary journey, poised to become the first person to traverse Saudi Arabia on foot from its northernmost to southernmost points. This expedition is set to commence on January 1, 2025, and will span a 2,500 kilometers over the course of five months.

Navigating diverse landscapes

With the assistance of local guides and camels, Morrison will navigate the Kingdom’s expansive deserts, verdant oases, and majestic mountains. Her mission is driven by three main goals: to uncover new landmarks and explore historical depths, to underscore the crucial role of Saudi women in society, and to highlight the natural beauty of the landscape alongside the Kingdom’s conservation efforts.

Illuminating historical narratives

By following the routes of ancient caravans, Morrison seeks to shed light on the historical narratives that shape this region, providing fresh insights into a Saudi Arabia that is experiencing rapid transformation and development. A significant stop on her journey will be AlUla, a place celebrated for its rich history and cultural heritage. This location is well-known to Morrison, who showcased it in her recent series, “Arabian Adventures: The Secrets of the Nabateans.”

A lifelong passion for exploration

Reflecting on her expedition, Morrison shared, “I have been studying Arabic and the Middle East for 45 years. Now, I get to explore the heart of Arabia.” As a female explorer, she also emphasized her desire to connect with Saudi women and share their stories.

“The route I am taking is stuffed with history, so I’ll be searching for new sites. I’m also walking through climate change and will be recording my findings,” she noted. “The desert is a harsh mistress, and I am sure she will be teaching me many lessons along the route.”

Inspiring others to pursue their dreams

At 61, Morrison expressed her hope that her adventure will inspire others to pursue their dreams. “I am a mid-life woman, and I hope my adventure inspires others to get out and follow their dreams. I couldn’t have attempted this at 25; I needed the life experience to get me here.”
