In accordance with the visionary leadership and reflecting the UAE’s prominent position in global climate initiatives and sustainable development, exemplified by hosting COP28 and coinciding with the nation’s commemoration of the 52nd Union Day, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has unveiled the introduction of a new AED500 banknote crafted from polymer. This release marks the third phase of the national currency project, featuring unique designs and state-of-the-art security elements.

The banknote’s design encapsulates the UAE’s remarkable sustainability journey, its trailblazing approach to development, its influential global position, its commendable record of climate action, and its unwavering dedication to advancing sustainable solutions. The international community has recognized this commitment, as evidenced by the UAE being chosen to host COP28, aligning with the country’s innovative approach and proactive role in addressing global challenges. The issuance of the banknote further bolsters the visionary leadership’s vision to expedite the transition towards a green economy, ensuring a future built on sustainable development.
Highlighting UAE’s sustainable development efforts
The recently introduced AED500 banknote highlights the UAE’s sustainable development efforts. It showcases prominent cultural and tourism landmarks. Additionally, it features exemplary sustainability models. On the front side, you will find a depiction of the striking architecture of the Terra Sustainability Pavilion in Expo City Dubai. This image serves as a powerful representation of the UAE’s dedication to building a sustainable future, firmly rooted in the principles established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
On the reverse side of the polymer banknote, the focus is on the Museum of the Future in Dubai, a remarkable architectural and engineering masterpiece that seamlessly connects the past with the future. Additionally, the banknote prominently showcases iconic landmarks such as the Emirates Towers and the Burj Khalifa. The Burj Khalifa, standing tall at 828 meters with over 160 floors, holds the distinction of being the world’s tallest building. It serves as a shining example of sustainability, deriving a significant portion of its power from solar energy, making it a beacon of environmentally friendly practices.
Two times durability
Taking a strategic approach towards sustainability, the CBUAE has chosen to utilize polymer material for the new banknote, resulting in a durability that is two or more times greater than traditional banknotes. This fully recyclable material significantly minimizes the environmental footprint associated with the banknote’s production and usage.
Aesthetic design
The aesthetic design of the banknote is carefully crafted. It incorporates a harmonious range of blue tones. These tones are reminiscent of the existing banknote of the same denomination currently in circulation. Also, this deliberate choice facilitates effortless identification for the general public. Moreover, the reverse side of the banknote features fluorescent blue markings that represent the UAE nation brand. These markings are further enhanced by intricately detailed drawings and engravings, skillfully crafted using advanced intaglio printing techniques.
Advanced security features
With the integration of cutting-edge security features, the AED500 banknote introduces the use of KINEGRAM COLORS, a multi-colored security chip technology. In addition, the UAE achieves a significant milestone. It becomes the first country in the Middle East to incorporate a large foil strip on banknotes. This incorporation enhances the country’s defense against counterfeiting. The same technologies were previously employed in the new version of the AED1000 banknote. This marked a first for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions.
Inclusivity
In line with its commitment to inclusivity, the CBUAE has thoughtfully included prominent braille symbols on the banknote. These symbols serve to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in recognizing the banknote and determining its value.
Furthermore, the new banknote began circulation today, Thursday, 30th November 2023. To ensure a smooth transition, all banks and exchange houses have been instructed to program their cash deposit machines and counting devices accordingly. This will enable seamless acceptance of the new banknotes, alongside existing paper and polymer banknotes, whose value is legally guaranteed.
