Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said announced that the population growth rate in Egypt experienced a significant decline of 46 percent between 2017 and 2023. The minister referred to a report released by the National Project for Egyptian Family Development (NPEFD) to support this statement.

In 2023, the population growth rate in Egypt reached its lowest point in the past 50 years, dropping by 1.4 percent, as reported by the minister. The NPEFD report indicated that the birth rate in Egypt was two million in 2023, showing a decline of 15 percent compared to 2018 and 7 percent compared to 2022, according to Ahram Online.
The population clock maintained by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) recorded a population of 105.8 million as of January 1st. This marked an increase from 104.4 million in 2022 and 102.8 million in 2021.
The fertility rate in Egypt demonstrated a decrease from 3.5 children per woman in 2014 to 2.85 in 2021, according to the most recent family health survey.
Additionally, the survey revealed a rise in the contraceptive prevalence rate, which reached 66.4 percent in 2021, compared to 58.5 percent in 2014.
In January 2024, CAPMAS said the population growth rate in Egypt showed in 2023 an 8 percent decline compared to the previous year, 2022. Furthermore, it reported that Egypt’s population reached 105.858 million individuals as of January 1, 2024, compared to 104.395 million individuals during the corresponding period in the previous year.
Global population
According to the same report, the global population reached on July 1, 2023 a recorded figure of 8.05 billion. Among this population, approximately 1.28 billion individuals reside in more developed regions such as Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
Significantly, there was a notable shift in the population rankings of countries in 2023. India ascended to the top position as the most populous nation, surpassing China, which now holds the second position.
In contrast, around 6.77 billion people live in less developed countries, encompassing Africa and Asia (excluding Japan), Latin America, the Caribbean, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
Projections indicate that the global population is anticipated to reach 8.9 billion individuals by mid-2035 and further increase to 9.7 billion individuals by mid-2050.
Egypt holds the fourteenth position worldwide in terms of population, ranking third in Africa and first in the Arab world.
